If we talk about traveling
with your emotional support dog in airplanes, people didn’t face much of
an issue in the past years as they were allowed to travel with their ESA on
airplanes. And up till the recent changes in the laws led under the Air Carrier
Access Act, which governed the travel of emotional support animals, airlines
weren’t permitted to charge any additional fees for the ESAs travel. Also,
there were no restrictions on the size of the emotional support dog or any
other animal according to the rules of the Air Carrier Access Act.
Modifications in the Air Carrier Access
Act
Both service animals and emotional support animals were allowed to travel with their pet owners according to the Air Carrier Access Act. But with the modifications done in December 2020, emotional support animals are no longer allowed to travel in-cabin with their pet owner as they are different from service animals, who are intended to help disabled persons. The modifications done are as follows:
Reclassification
According to the changes made in the ACAA emotional support animals have been reclassified as pets and are no longer included in the category of service animals. However, your emotional support dog or animal can still travel with you, but not in-cabin. You need to pay an additional fee and your ESA will travel in the cargo hold with other animals during your flight duration.
Modifications of Service

If you are a disabled person having a service animal, then being a passenger you need to fill out a form as per the law, that shall include the information about the behavior, training, and health of your service animal. Not only that, you need to submit the duly filled form to the airline in which you’ll be traveling 48 hours prior in hand. Secondly, you’ll not be allowed be take more than two service animals along with you on the plane. And as far as emotional support dogs are concerned, laws have changed. However, this doesn’t mean the changes in rule stop you from getting an ESA letter.
